Wonder Woman’s Warriors

DC Extended Universe has released a number of movies in the past, some of which, such as Suicide Squad and Man of Steel, have received less than stellar reviews. However, their latest movie, Wonder Woman, is set to be their best movie yet, with many critics praising the fact that there is finally a female-oriented superhero film out there. The cast really makes the movie, with Wonder Woman’s warriors providing strong role models for young women of today to look up to.

Ann Wolfe
A female American boxer who has earned herself a number of titles over the years, Ann Wolfe was a surprising, but most-welcomed, addition to the Wonder Woman cast. Director Patty Jenkins firmly believed that since the movie was all about powerful women, the cast should be equally powerful, and, being an avid admirer of Ann Wolfe, decided to approach her about the role. While Wolfe may not have had much acting experience, this did not prevent her from establishing quite a presence in the role of Artemis of Bana-Mighdall, both on and off the camera, and she relished the role that she played, claiming that the Wonder Woman experience was more rewarding than anything she had achieved in the boxing world. Her character is quite a significant part of the film, and even though this was quite a huge responsibility for someone new to acting, Wolfe really managed to hold her own.

Actress Robin Wright

Robin Wright
An American actress and director, Robin Wright is best known for her role in Netflix series House of Cards, but has also starred in several movies, including Forrest Gump, Message in a Bottle, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Everest. Most recently, Wright played the role of General Antiope in Wonder Woman, a role that was quite different from others she has played, but really managed to exceed expectations. Portraying a strong woman with a steely strength and beauty, Wright brings a unique sense of creativity to the role, and while she may only be featured in the first twenty minutes of the movie, she really stands out as one of the stars of the whole film.

Connie Nielsen
Connie Nielsen is a Danish actress who first entered the English-language film market in 1997 in The Devil’s Advocate. Since then, she has starred in a number of different films and television show, and recently joined DCEU as Hippolyta in Wonder Woman. Nielsen took on the role exceptionally, throwing herself head-first into the intense training that was needed for the part that she was playing. The fact that she was playing a female warrior made the experience even richer for her, and was proud to be able to depict true female strength.

With Wonder Woman already experiencing so much success, it comes as no surprise that a sequel has been confirmed, and will likely also be fast-tracked. For those who are looking forward to catching up on the adventures of the characters, it would seem as though you will not have too long to wait.

Our Favorite Movies of 2016

2016 was a great year for the film industry, and saw many exceptional movies being released. From unnerving dramas to historic adaptations, here are some of our favorite movies from 2016.

Room
One of the most unnerving dramas released in 2016 was Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, featuring a young woman and her child who are being imprisoned against their will. Brie Larson was the star of the film, and her spot-on acting skills, coupled with the traumatic nature of the storyline, will definitely keep this one in your mind long after the credits roll up.

Queen of Katwe
Queen of Katwe was released by Disney, and while this may instantly make you think that the movie features traditional values and a syrupy-sweet storyline, this film stands out from Disney’s more conventional offerings. The storyline focuses on a young girl in Uganda, whose world quickly changes when she becomes introduced to the game of chess. This is, without a doubt, a heart-warming movie, and the fact that it is a true story makes it even better.

The BFG
Anyone that read the iconic Roald Dahl book The BFG as a child will be captivated by this big-screen adaptation. While it may be slightly longer than many would prefer, this is quite a signature quality of Spielberg films, and is not noticeable once you start to get into the storyline. While Mark Rylance plays the BFG perfectly, the star of the show is Ruby Barnhill, who manages to portray little Sophie in a heart-tugging way.

Love and Friendship
Based on Jane Austen’s novel Lady Susan, Love and Friendship is a period piece that still manages to retain quite the timeless quality. While there is plenty of history within the film, this is an extremely witty movie, featuring drama, ornate costumes, and Kate Beckinsdale as the star.

Jackie
Jackie is a movie that focuses on the grief that Jackie Kennedy experienced after the tragic loss of JFK. Natalie Portman is the star of the show here, and while she may not be an obvious choice for the role of Jackie, she manages to portray this First Lady beautifully well, displaying a side of sincerity and humility that makes the movie even more likeable. The movie also touches on the topic of celebrity, and the way in which people are built up by the media and fame, which is a relevant subject in today’s world.

Victoria
While its storyline of a Spanish girl who meets four men in the street, and then helps them to pull off a robbery, may already be attention-grabbing, it is the way in which Victoria is made that really sets this movie apart from others. A single-take thriller, this is a movie that plays out in real time, with a continuous 138 minute camera shot, making it feel as though the audience is right in the heart of all the action.

If you have not yet seen any of these movies, they definitely deserve a spot on your queue list. From the heart-thumping thrills of Room to the feel-good qualities of Queen of Katwe, these were, without a doubt, some of the finest films produced in 2016.

Top US Films of All Time

America may have released a staggering amount of movies throughout history, but only a small number of these films have staying power, and continue to be watched and talked about to this day. From classic dramas to crime thrillers, these are some of the top US films of all time.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Written, directed and produced by Orson Welles, Citizen Kane is considered by many critics to be the greatest film ever to be made. Welles was given a huge amount of creative freedom with this movie, and its success is perhaps due to the fact that so much of it came from such an artistic genius. With a number of incredible performances, as well as creative cinematography and narrative structure, Citizen Kane is considered to be extremely innovative and ahead of its time. The movie features Welles playing the role of Charles Foster Kane, with the movie depicting his life in the publishing world, as well as his subsequent pursuit of power. Although the film was not a commercial success at the box office, largely due to its delayed release and limited distribution, it received unanimous praise from critics and special editions are still being released today.

The Godfather (1972)
Unlike Citizen Kane, The Godfather was the box office leader for the year that it was released, and is regarded by many to be one of the greatest films in world cinema. The film stars Al Pacino and Marlon Brando as the leaders of the fictional New York Corleone crime family, and every role in the movie has been so perfectly cast that you simply cannot imagine anybody else playing those characters. The movie resonates with many due to the way in which it focuses on immigrant life, bringing the gangster theme into it in an extremely clever way. The cinematography is also widely revered, as is the overall moral message that the movie conveys.

Casablanca (1942)
Casablanca, an American romantic melodrama, finds its way onto so many different top ten film lists, and while it may not have done spectacularly well when first released, it earned its reputation over time. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid, and, set during the second world war, depicts a love triangle in which both men are vying for the love of the same woman. While the film may focus on something quite inconsequential when compared to the war going on in the background, it is full of loaded political messages that give viewers a fantastic insight into the military situation at that time. The dialogue boasts several memorable lines, and the musical score is full of suspense, adding a rich element to the film. Whether you enjoy a romantic movie plot or not, Casablanca’s charm is sure to steal your heart.

Not only are these movies the top US films of all time, but they are also considered to be some of the greatest films in the world. Each of these movies have had a huge impact on its viewers, and, with such strong staying power, they are likely to continue having an influence on generations to come.

Most Influential Films of All Time

Family watching a movie.

The film industry is one of the many ways that humanity has sought to immortalize its ideas. Story after story goes from page to screen every year. Most of them get forgotten before the next summer rolls around and fail to make any lasting mark. This isn’t true of all films though. Some of them appear and make a mark that ensures they keep being watched decades later. These are the ones with lasting influence that tease the minds of generations as they find their own meaning in the images flickering across the screen or simply renew a universal understanding or fear. There are a lot of ways to rank the most influential films and it has to pick from just one. OROGOLD has simply taken a simply of some of the movies universally agreed to be true landmarks in film.

The Wizard of Oz
The transition from black and white to color is one of the highlights of film, and no film really captured the sense of wonder quite like “The Wizard of Oz”. It’s famous transition from the drab normal world to the technicolor dream world of Oz remains embedded in the cultural memory even long after color film has lost its novelty. The story itself is simple, but compelling enough to keep the attention of people of all ages. Dorothy and her friends travel across the strange lands of Oz trying to find what they need the most as people. The storybook feeling contributes to the sense of timelessness that keeps the film being played on television even now. Special effects may have come a long way since the movie first came out in 1939, but this film helped pave the way.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Stanley Kubrick is a name well known to film enthusiasts for a good reason. His eclectic yet perfectionist style for film created films most consider modern masterpieces. Dr. Strangelove (1964) is his ode to the surreal and unnerving absurdity of the Cold War. In a desperate bid to figure out how to stop the end of the world, top men gather in a secret in the United States to discuss the actions of a rogue general that could very well result in nuclear armageddon. The black comedy twists and turns as Kubrick and his viewers try to come to grips with the strange yet then familiar absurdity of living in a world where any moment could be the end. Some aspects of the movie are considered to be incredibly funny, but Kubrick never truly eases up his message on how truly wrong the world of the film is and the world he was living in was.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Animation is an art that waxes and wanes in its popularity. Disney typically restores interest in traditional animation whenever it starts to get low. This 1988 film was one such occurrence. Based on the novel “Who Censored Roger Rabbit?”, the film takes viewers on a wild ride through a world where humans and cartoon characters live side by side in Hollywood. It differs a great deal from its literary source, but the film is actually more beloved than its predecessor. It circles around a private eye, Eddie Valiant, doing his best to unravel a conspiracy blaming Roger Rabbit, an anthropomorphic cartoon rabbit, for the murder of Toon Town’s primary benefactor. They stake keep getting higher as a mysterious man known as Judge Doom takes over pursuing Roger with intent to be both the jury and the executioner as well.

What makes a lasting film is hard to say. Live action and animated films are each found among the most influential films in the world. Something in them speaks to people and calls out to something that is timeless. As a result, people continue to watch films to laugh and cry along with the characters. OROGOLD recommends seeing each of these films and looking at other lists for influential films. Each genre practically deserves its own list. Think of it as a way to while away the increasingly long fall nights and enjoy quiet, warm evenings at home.

The following style tips and ideas were inspired by the characters in her movies: from the vintage appeal of “The Virgin Suicides” to the eccentric and fabulous splendor of “Marie Antoinette.” Pastel colors and neutrals with ivory being the most standout, other trendy colors include light pinks, baby blues and mint greens. Although pastels are mainly colors that are more popular in the spring time, integrating a pastel-hued piece with popular autumn and/or winter color tones is a solid and fashionable look. A silk dress, cuffed boots, a double-breasted blazer can set off this look, with a black vintage beret for added flair.A full skirt, ruffled at the bottom, a puffy-sleeved cocoon jacket and a full hairstyle is another unique look inspired by this movie. Sex and the City
Style Tips Inspired By Sex and the City- The Movie
The four main characters in the “Sex and the City” movie exuded New York City style trends that appeal to many fashion fans. Each woman portrayed their own personal style of elegance and uniqueness. Carrie Bradshaw’s style is a mixture of high-end modern and vintage looks with bursts of color and interesting textures. Floral designs are also part of her look. A floral dress, stretch vest, and a pair of nude colored open-toed pumps, with a studded belt, funnel neck coat and gold colored bangles make a complete Carrie Bradshaw look. Samantha Jones’ style oozes sex appeal and clothing pieces that flatter the figure. Her character flaunts various colorful hues, with her signature colors being canary yellows and both brick and orange reds. This look can be pulled off with a yellow wool blazer, leopard print dress, a flap leather purse and tassel earrings.  Charlotte York’s style is more conservative, with a classic and polished trend.  Her look is not flashy but her femininity and perfectly detailed accents make her look stand out. A belted khaki dress, black crochet top and square-toed suede navy blue pumps emulate this look well. Add a sweetheart locket, a bow clutch and some rose-colored lip balm to top it off. Miranda Hobbes’ style consists of a lot of separates in her “working wardrobe” and her night look is often patterned or printed garments. A black waist-high skirt, deep purple ruffle blouse, wool blend tab coat and a pair of Gouda pumps complete a Miranda look. Gold rings and earrings give the look an added touch.
