Women Who Are Changing Social Perceptions of Beauty

Social perceptions of beauty are constantly changing, but most people still consider models and movie stars, with their realistically unattainable appearances, to be the ultimate when it comes to beauty. However, certain women have been able to have a deep impact on others, using their unconventionally beautiful appearances to inspire others to embrace their own similar physical aspects that they may otherwise have tried to hide. OROGOLD takes a look at some of the amazing women who have been able to make a change when it comes to social perceptions of beauty.

Chantelle Brown-Young
While you may not recognize her name, you are much more likely to recognize Chantelle’s face instantly. At the early age of 4, Chantelle was diagnosed with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes patches of skin all over the body to lose their pigmentation – the same condition that Michael Jackson suffered from when his skin turned white. Chantelle faced years of bullying and being treated like an outcast, until she was discovered by Tyra Banks and made it to the last rounds of modelling reality show, America’s Next Top Model. Now, Chantelle has plenty of experience and positive exposure behind her, from starring in an Eminem music video to modelling for Glamour magazine to walking the catwalk at London Fashion Week. Photos from Chantelle’s social media accounts show off her multi-colored skin, highlighting that it is this rare beauty that has enabled Chantelle to stand out from the others, and inspiring others with the same condition to embrace their skin rather than be ashamed of it.

Jacalyn O’Shaughnessy
Jacalyn O’Shaugnessy is a woman who has had a variety of careers over the years, from delivery girl to a successful actress, appearing in everything from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids to Night Court. However, around the time when she turned 60, she left LA and moved to New York. At the age of 62, she was discovered by American Apparel, and broke some major stereotypes when she modelled lingerie for this huge international brand. The response to the adverts were incredible, encouraging women all over the world to not let their age hold them back from doing what they wanted to do. While lingerie models conventionally all have a similar look, Jacalyn shows us all that beauty and confidence does not fade with age.

Jennifer Lopez
Before celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce began making a name for themselves, beauty ideals were focussed on being a size zero and having light skin – something that is completely unrealistic for the majority of women out there. With their ethnic backgrounds and beautiful curves, these celebrities started to shift the way in which many women looked at themselves. Curves became much more sought after, as did a more bronzed skin tone, and this is something that currently shows no signs of slowing down.

Although social perceptions of beauty are constantly being challenged, there is still a long way to go before ‘beautiful’ becomes realistic. Beauty really is very subjective, and in order to be at your most beautiful, take OROGOLD’s advice and just always remain true to yourself and your values – your confidence is true beauty that cannot be bought.

Inspiring Beauty Quotes to Live By

Beautiful woman in a bathrobe

The topic of beauty is one that has been debated for centuries, mostly due to how subjective it is. No matter what your opinion on beauty may be, there are always those days when we could each do with a little beauty confidence booster, which is why OROGOLD has put together some truly inspiring beauty quotes to live by.

“There is no exquisite beauty…without some strangeness in the proportion.” Edgar Allan Poe
An American author and poet from the romantic movement, Edgar Allan Poe was one of the first well-known American writers to try to make a living solely from writing. This led him to have quite a financially unstable life, but, dedicated to his craft, Edgar Allan Poe went on to become one of the most respected writers of his time. His wise words on the topic of beauty are similar to a more recent quote by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld; “I don’t like standard beauty – there is no beauty without strangeness”, and both emphasize that, rather than stemming from perfection, exquisite beauty is found within ‘strangeness’ – those imperfect little quirks that many try to hide rather than embrace.

“Beauty [is] a kind of radiance. People who possess a true inner beauty, their eyes are a little brighter, their skin a little more dewy. They vibrate at a different frequency.” Cameron Diaz
Like many world-famous actresses, Cameron Diaz is constantly trying to bring attention to the fact that true beauty comes from within. Audrey Hepburn once said “true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she knows.” OROGOLD challenges you to think of some women that you find beautiful, and, other than their physical attributes, try to work out what it is that makes them beautiful. More often than not, you will find that it is in the aura that they emanate, and in their infectious positive energy. As Taylor Swift said, “happiness and confidence are the prettiest things you can wear”.

“Youth is happy because it has the capacity to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.” Franz Kafka
This quote from Franz Kafka, one of the most influential writers of the 20th Century, brings a really important point to attention – the fact that our perception of beauty changes as we age. While young, society has not yet been able to influence the way in which the world is seen, but, as we age, we start to only see beauty in line with societal norms and expectations, which only brings about detrimental effects. As Marilyn Monroe put it, to all the girls who think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, it’s society who’s ugly. OROGOLD urges you to constantly re-evaluate and challenge your own personal concept of beauty, ensuring that you are always able to form your own opinions rather than being heavily influenced by what society tells you is beautiful.

Beauty comes in so many different forms, and is one of the most subjective terms in the world. OROGOLD hopes that these inspirational beauty quotes help you to see that beauty really does come from within, so keep this in mind the next time you find yourself struggling with the concept of beauty.
