With spring quickly approaching, it is time to turn your attention to the season’s upcoming fashion trends, with some of the hottest ones having been spotted at New York Fashion Week. From energetic stripes to feminine florals, here is all you need to know if you are looking to update your wardrobe for spring 2017.

Energetic Stripes
Stripes often tend to make a comeback in the spring, but rather than featuring delicate pastels, 2017 is all about bold, vibrant and energetic stripes. Just about every color was seen in stripe form on the runways, with graphic primary colors being the most popular, especially when anchored down with a base of black.

80’s Glam
Garments inspired by 80’s glam were also extremely prevalent on the runways of New York Fashion Week, with everything from metallic fabrics to graphic t-shirts. Leather jackets, mini skirts and 80’s inspired sneakers are also set to be popular this season, and can easily be styled with items that you already own to give your look more of a modern edge.

Feminine Florals
Florals are another print that are always a hit in the spring, and while this may not be anything new, this season’s florals are bright, bold and fresh. From Tanya Taylor to Tibi, florals appeared on just about everything on the runways, from long-tiered skirts to ruffled jumpsuits, resulting in many show-stopping outfits.

Ruffles
Ruffles are beautifully feminine, and made a huge appearance at New York Fashion Week, with just about every runway show featuring a certain amount of flounce. However, while some of these looks may have seemed slightly over-the-top, other designers managed to perfectly balance out their ruffles with some tailored sleekness, such as the one-shouldered dress from J. Crew, which also featured stripes, and the voluminous skirt from Zimmerman.

Key Colors
There are always certain colors that dominate each season, and, as seen at New York Fashion Week, the shades that you can expect to see more of this spring are nude colors, such as hazelnut and khaki, as well as soft, pretty shades, with pink being especially popular. However, neon shades have also made a comeback, as seen on the runways of DKNY, Phillip Lim, Jason Wu and so many more, from bright blues to neon greens, promising to add a bright pop of color to any outfit.

Statement Earrings
Statement jewelry has been all the rage for a while, but this trend has usually focused on items such as rings and necklaces, with earrings being neglected. However, New York Fashion Week turned this all around with their incredible selection of statement earrings. From the neon pink shoulder-grazing shapes from Delpozo to the large double hoops from Hellessy, these pieces not only make quite the statement, but also beautifully frame the face and make it the focal point of your look.

Fashion trends are always coming and going, with each season bringing with it new and exciting looks. While some of these trends may be common in the spring, they were all presented in fresh and innovative ways at New York Fashion Week, exuding a huge amount of creativity and style.

Choosing Age Appropriate Nail Art

Nail art

Nail art is a trend that does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, but many of the popular designs just do not seem to work on women who have passed a certain age. If this is the case for you, this does not mean that you have to shun the nail art trend, and can instead opt for designs that are sophisticated and age appropriate.

“Kiss Me Kate” Stripe
The “Kiss Me Kate” Stripe was created by celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann, who was inspired by the aesthetic of designer Kate Spade. This design consists of a crisp white nail that features a jet black horizontal stripe running across it, resulting in a beautifully contrasting graphic look. Stripes in general are always a classy design to go for, and there is still plenty of room for experimentation, whether this may be with the hues that you use or the direction that the stripes run in.

Crop Top
The Crop Top nail design is all about making use of negative space, and intentionally incorporates some bare nail. Rather than color blocking the nail with two shades, the bottom half of the nail is left bare, while the top half features a shade that is deep and rich. Rather than opting for a standard shade, go for something such as mustard yellow or hunter green, as these will make your nails look even more luxe.

Fine Art
There are many manicurists out there that are exceptionally talented when it comes to reinterpreting works of fine art for the nails, and, depending on the artist and piece that you choose, this is a look that really screams sophistication. Whether you opt for the graphic squares of Mondrian, abstract shapes from Picasso, or whimsical floral details from Japanese masters, the key to mastering this look is finding a manicurist who is able to really perfect each one of your nails.

ombre nail art

Ombre
Ombre, which means shaded in French, makes use of two main colors, with the first one fading into the next, showcasing different shades in between. This is an elegant design, and can have varying effects depending on the colors that you pick. Blue fading into black will give you quite a deep and intense look, while a baby pink fading into aubergine is much more fun, but still age appropriate.

Lace Tips
Lace-tipped nails ooze elegance, but also have a subtle level of sexiness to them, which makes them a great design no matter your age. There are many different ways to achieve this look, from drawing it on yourself if you have steady hands, to applying nail art stickers, to even using nail glue to apply the actual lace to your nails. However, keep in mind that, in order to keep this style age appropriate, you need to make sure that the lace does not stray too far from your tips, and is not too over the top.

As you can see from each of these designs, age appropriate does not have to mean boring. Instead, it is all about choosing styles that are sophisticated, as well as relatively minimal in terms of design and color palette. The next time you are having a manicure done, try something new and give one of these nail art designs a go.

Mixing Trendy and Classic

Classic pieces are essential in any wardrobe, as they are so versatile, and can be worked into just about any style. When combining a classic piece with a more modern and trendy piece, the results will be a truly fashion forward look that makes a bold and individual statement.

Classic Tops
For those of you just beginning to venture into the idea of mixing classic with trendy, tops are a great place to start. Classic options could include a button down shirt, a button down soft blouse, or a denim shirt, with each of these garments having so much potential when it comes to putting together a trendy outfit. The white shirt in itself can be worn in so many different ways, whether with trendy leather pants and ballet flats, or cigarette pants and a cropped sweater. Stripes are also a classic look when it comes to tops, and can be paired with anything from a pencil skirt to slouchy pants.

Accessories
The accessories that you choose to go with an outfit that has both classic and trendy elements is quite important, as this can either bring your whole look together or make it seem disjointed. If the focus of your outfit is on one of your classic pieces, it is usually best to keep your accessories quite trendy and contemporary, picking a color that is present in your outfit and opting for accessories in this same shade.

Woman wearing a trench coat

Outerwear
Just like with tops, it is relatively easy to style an outfit with the focus being on a classic piece of outerwear. Whether it may be a classic trench coat, a denim jacket or a simple blazer, these looks can all be paired with trendier items to give them a modern twist. Try wearing a trench coat with a pair of boyfriend jeans and a clutch, or a classic tailored blazer with a pair of skinny jeans for a fashionable smart casual look. When it comes to the denim jacket, try wearing this with a pencil skirt and some strappy sandals for an elegant yet feminine look.

Contemporary Hair and Makeup
The best way to give a classic/trendy look some grounding is by ensuring that your hair and makeup has plenty of contemporary touches. Even if you take inspiration from classic hairstyles and makeup techniques, which is always a fantastic idea for a look that is truly your own, make sure that the finished look is modernized, as this will give your entire outfit a fresh and relevant appeal.

Fashion is all about individuality, and your style choices reflect different aspects of your personality. If you are finding it difficult making your classic pieces look contemporary, try working on adjusting the silhouette, and make sure that your outfit contains plenty of non-neutral color. Mixing trendy pieces with classic ones is a great way to give your look a unique twist, so if your wardrobe is lacking some of the statement classic pieces mentioned above, this season is a great time to start adding some in.

Urban Chic Styles for Spring

While it may still be slightly chilly outside, spring is almost upon us, meaning it is time for that annual wardrobe overhaul. There are many great pieces on-trend for this spring, and if you want to incorporate some urban chic into your look, check out these styles that are all easy to replicate.

Woman wearing a striped dress

Stripes
Bold, wide stripes are going to be huge this spring and are a great pattern to add to your wardrobe, as they give you some New England elegance that can easily be grunged down for a more urban chic look. A striped shirt with skinny jeans and knee high boots is always a stylish look, or, for something slightly girlier, pair a striped shirt with a bandage skirt and some Converse All Stars, topping off your outfit with a chic bowler hat.

Statement Jewellery
Statement jewellery is a great way to add elements of urban chic to a look, but you need to seek out the best pieces for this. Statement bib necklaces add instant cool to any outfit, while pearls are a classy way to dress up a more casual look. Chunky chains are also going to be hot this spring, and can be worn on different parts of your body, from around your neck to around your wrists. If there is a certain type of jewellery that you are crazy about, such as two-finger rings or large graphic earrings, make this your signature style and experiment with different pieces that fall within your chosen category.

The Backpack
A stylish backpack is about as urban chic as it gets, and luckily, backpacks have been given an exciting makeover for this spring thanks to designers such as Rick Owens, Burberry and Alexander Wang. Graphic handbags are also going to be popular this spring, so you could even consider mixing two trends into one, with a vibrant graphic backpack to complete your look.

“It” Shoes
Having an “it” pair of shoes can immediately transform an outfit, instantly taking it from regular to urban chic. The style that you pick needs to be one that you love, whether they are Nike high-top dunks, thigh-high boots or skinny kitten heels. For a true urban chic look, a casual pair of “it” shoes should be paired with a more elegant garment, such as Converse All Stars with a short little black dress, while dressy shoes always stand out when worn with a more laid-back outfit, such as a pair of simple jeans and a t-shirt. Of course, there are styles that work with just about any pair of shoes, such as a classic white shirt paired with black leggings, as this simple look allows the footwear to stand out and make a statement.

Adding elements of urban chic to your look does not need to be difficult, even if incorporating new styles into your own does not come naturally to you. Whether you look for some statement jewellery to wear each day or find new ways to style your favorite striped shirt, these tips will all lend an urban edge to just about any outfit.
