Kids’ Summer Camp Essentials

Summer camp

Every year, across the USA, millions of children head off to different summer camps, focussing on everything from tennis to space travel for a few weeks over the summer. No matter what sort of camp your children may be attending this year, these are some of the essentials that they should be bringing with them.

Sun Protection
Your kids are likely to be spending more time than usual outdoors while at summer camp, making it essential for them to have the best sun protection possible. From sunscreen to sun hats to sunglasses to after sun gel, be sure to make sun protection a priority when packing for camp.

Waterproof Coat and Boots
Even if the weather is forecast to be bright and sunny for the entire time that your child will be away, you need to ensure that they have some waterproof clothing for any spontaneous downpours. A waterproof coat and a pair of waterproof boots are sufficient, although you may want to include more waterproof items if they are going to be spending their time near water.

Clothing
Everyday clothing is essential at camp, with the type of clothing depending on the type of camp your kid is attending. If the camp has merchandised clothing for sale, it may be worth buying an item for your child, as this may help them settle in even faster.

Nightwear and Underwear
The amount of nightwear and underwear that your child needs to bring depends on how long they will be spending away from home. To help keep underwear organized, store it in a net bag, and pack your child a spare, empty net bag that they can then fill with used underwear.

Toiletries
Toiletries are another essential and are easy to pack in one smaller bag to keep them all organized. In addition to a toothbrush, toothpaste and shower products, include a few extras, such as lip balm, hair ties, a nail clipper, a razor and feminine hygiene products.

Others
There are plenty of other essentials that your child may need, such as insect repellent, a camera, a flashlight and a refillable water bottle. Do not forget to include some pre-stamped and addressed envelopes, as well as writing paper and pens, to encourage your children to write home about their adventures. When it comes to spending money, each camp will have their own policy, so be sure to check with them first. It is also a good idea to include a couple of mementos to remind your children of home, whether this may be a couple of toys from their room or some family photos as this will help them out if they ever start to feel homesick.

Summer camp is often considered to be a right of passage for American children, and with over 12,000 camps across the country, it is easy for kids to find one that offers something that they are passionate about. Each camp usually provides a list of items that children need to bring, as well as others that they should not, so be sure to follow this list carefully in order for your child to be well-prepared for the weeks ahead.
