Understanding Skin Tone

types of skin

Whether it be trying to match with the latest foundation formula’s shades or picking out a concealer that you can use on a daily basis, the only way that you will be able to select the best makeup hues is if you truly understand your skin tone. By knowing more about your own skin tone, as well as its undertones, the makeup that you pick will be able to beautifully complement your skin, providing you with a much brighter and clearer appearance.

Determining Skin Tone
Determining your skin tone is much easier than determining your skin’s undertones, as your skin tone is much more obvious, and is usually linked to your ethnicity. This is because your ethnicity plays a huge role in determining how much melanin your skin contains, which is the pigment that gives skin its color, and is also your skin’s natural defense against the sun’s harmful UV rays. There are so many different skin tones out there, which is why products will usually fall into certain tonal categories, ranging from light to very dark. It is also important to remember that your skin tone may change with the seasons, getting darker in the summer and lighter in the winter, so it is important to have products that cater to each of your different skin tones.

Determining Skin Undertone
Your skin’s undertone is the color that lies just below the surface of your skin, and while your skin tone may change depending on the level of sunlight it has been exposed to, your undertone will remain constant throughout your life. While it can sometimes be difficult determining your undertone, the color of your veins, as well as the tint to your skin, can give you a slight insight into what your undertone may be.

Cool Undertones
Those who have a cool colored undertone will usually have veins that appear blue or purple when viewed in natural lighting, with a slight pink, red or blue tinge to the skin. When it comes to selecting makeup shades, silvers, lilacs and pinks all work well on eyes with a cool undertone, while plums and rosy pinks perfectly complement the cheeks.

Warm Undertones
If your skin has a yellow or peach tinge, and your veins are more of a green or olive, then this means that you likely have a warm undertone to your skin. This means that you should focus on corals and peaches for your lips and cheeks, while opting for rich and decadent golds, bronzes and coppers around your eyes.

Neutral Undertones
Those who have more of a neutral undertone will experience features from both the cool and the warm categories. Fortunately, those with a neutral undertone are able to wear just about any color that they desire, giving them a wide variety to choose from.

When it comes to choosing makeup shades and hues, it is important to keep your skin tone, as well as your undertone, in mind, as this can have a huge impact on your selection. While your skin tone may be a more obvious feature to match with, understanding your undertone will ensure that the shade that you pick will truly complement your appearance, giving you a much more radiant and polished finish.
